Barista’s in Beanies? Motors Coffee Cofounder Answers

Baristas wearing beanies: a Hollywood fiction or reality?

Yes, it may be a “stereotype of the hipster”, but for Thomas, the cofounder of Motors coffee, it’s simply to keep hair out of his face without wearing a uniform.

For Thomas’s “classic” style it’s important to wear clothes that feel good to work in, like his “thermal Uniqlo sweater”, or his “APC jeans”. His style may be “simple”, but the attention to detail, and cost, is anything but lackluster.

At Motors Coffee, a coffee shop with metal brimmed counters and a band of happy-go-lucky barista’s dressed in black baggy casual streetwear, there is no dress code.

Thomas dislikes mandating “aprons” or uniforms in the shop and says it “creates a barrier”, between the customer and the barista.

For this “small independent coffee shop”, the only distinction between the customers and employees is the counter top.
